Clinical Rigor in a Crowded Market
The oral care aisle is a minefield of marketing claims. Patients sit in our chairs every day asking if a viral toothpaste will actually whiten their teeth or just strip their enamel. We built this evaluation protocol to answer those questions.
We look past the packaging. We examine the active ingredients. We assess the clinical evidence.
Our goal is simple.
We want to protect your teeth, protect your gums, and protect your wallet. We evaluate dental products through a strict clinical lens. No fluff. No paid endorsements. Real evidence.
How We Select Products for Review
We ignore the noise. We select products based on the actual questions patients ask in the clinic. If a new electric toothbrush hits the market and claims to remove more plaque, we pull it for review. If a mail-order aligner company launches an aggressive ad campaign, we investigate their clinical protocols.
We prioritize three specific categories. High-risk interventions like at-home whitening kits. Daily maintenance tools like sonic toothbrushes and water irrigators. Preventative formulations like remineralizing toothpastes and fluoride rinses.
Our Clinical Evaluation Criteria
We don’t rely on manufacturer summaries. We apply a strict, standardized framework to every product. We evaluate safety, efficacy, and usability.
- Abrasivity and Safety: We check the Relative Dentin Abrasivity (RDA) value of every toothpaste. Anything above 150 gets flagged. We won’t recommend products that permanently damage enamel.
- Active Ingredients: We verify the concentration of fluoride, nano-hydroxyapatite, or hydrogen peroxide. We cross-reference these concentrations with current peer-reviewed dental literature.
- Mechanical Efficacy: For hardware, we assess brush head oscillation frequencies, water flosser pressure metrics measured in PSI, and battery degradation over time.
- Patient Compliance: A tool only works if patients actually use it. We evaluate the physical weight, grip ergonomics, and interface complexity of electronic devices.
The Time We Invest
Clinical evaluation takes time. You can’t assess a sonic toothbrush in an afternoon. We commit to a minimum 30-day testing window for all daily-use hardware. This allows us to observe battery life decay, bristle fraying, and actual plaque reduction over a standard hygiene cycle.
For chemical interventions like whitening strips or gels, we follow a strict 14-day protocol. We monitor for dentinal hypersensitivity. We track gingival irritation. We document the actual shade progression using standard clinical shade guides.
We test it. We measure it. We publish it.
What We Refuse to Review
Trust requires boundaries.
We strictly refuse to review or recommend certain categories of products. We will never evaluate professional-grade dental instruments marketed for home use. Metal plaque scalers belong in the hands of a licensed hygienist, not in a residential bathroom.
We don’t review DIY orthodontic systems. Moving teeth without radiographic supervision causes irreversible bone loss and root resorption. We won’t legitimize these systems by treating them as standard consumer goods.
We also reject any product that relies on activated charcoal for whitening. The clinical consensus is clear. It’s highly abrasive and offers no therapeutic benefit.
Our Lead Clinical Evaluator
Every review on Family Dentist Pro passes through the desk of Dr. Ege Korkmaz, DDS, PhD. Dr. Korkmaz is a licensed orthodontist with a doctorate in dental biomaterials. He understands exactly how chemical agents interact with enamel at a microscopic level. He knows the mechanical limits of orthodontic brackets and clear aligners.
Dr. Korkmaz doesn’t just read the abstracts. He evaluates the methodology of the clinical trials backing these products. His dual background in clinical practice and academic research ensures our reviews remain grounded in actual science.
Please speak to your healthcare provider before making significant changes to your oral care routine, especially if you have active periodontal disease or extensive restorations.
How We Maintain Accuracy
Dental technology moves fast. Manufacturers quietly change toothpaste formulations. Hardware companies release firmware updates for smart toothbrushes. A review published yesterday quickly becomes obsolete tomorrow.
We audit our core product reviews every six months. We check for formulation changes. We verify that the products are still available. We update our clinical stance if new peer-reviewed research emerges regarding a specific ingredient.
If a product fails our standards after an update, we pull our recommendation immediately. We owe our allegiance to the patient, never the manufacturer.
